Between October 19 and 22, 2026, three marketing platforms shipped tools that shift a marketer’s main job from building a campaign to naming its goal. Salesforce made its Campaign Agent generally available with goal-driven campaigns, where marketers “set the outcome they want and let the agent orchestrate the rest.” Reddit added a campaign optimization score and automatic budget shifting to its Ads Manager, and JustAI launched a platform whose agents test campaigns against revenue goals. For a client, that means the sentence defining the goal now steers more spend than any single setting the team used to tune by hand. If the goal names a cheap action, the agent will find more cheap actions, whether or not they ever become customers.
Basil C. Puglisi made the case for this shift a year ago in How AI Disrupted the Traditional Marketing Funnel (October 2025). He wrote that “AI can optimize exposure, but only a person can decide whether that exposure represents the brand accurately,” and that incrementality testing moves analytics “from the domain of marketing to that of governance.” His advice for a client turning on goal-driven agents follows from that post. Write the goal in the business’s own terms, have a named person sign it, and judge the agent first on the client’s own records, with the platform’s score as a second read.
What three platforms released between October 19 and 22
The Marketing Cloud Winter ’27 release, published October 22, lists more than 60 releases. Campaign Agent: Agentic Campaigns “replaces” preset, hand-built journeys “with goal-driven campaigns that adapt to every customer’s context in real time,” and Salesforce says Campaign Agent is generally available now. A companion feature, Personalized Paths in Flow, routes each customer down the path most likely to convert, “based on their behavior and a custom conversion metric you define.” Salesforce’s Campaign Agent product page adds that the agent weighs competing campaigns for each customer, sends the best fit and suppresses the rest. Marketers review and approve content and guardrails before launch. Limited agentic capabilities will be available with Marketing Cloud Next Advanced, and additional campaigns and content generations will cost extra.
Reddit’s October 20 announcement covers three Ads Manager tools. A campaign planner projects reach, impressions and costs and turns a chosen plan into a draft campaign. A campaign optimization score rates each campaign from 0 to 100% and attaches recommendations, while campaign budget optimization moves spend toward the best-performing ad groups inside a campaign. The planner and score are rolling out to all advertisers through October. Budget optimization is available for Awareness and consideration and for Traffic, and it’s still in beta for Sales, Lead generation and App promotion.
JustAI announced its full-stack agentic marketing platform on October 19. “Marketers set the goals and guardrails, and JustAI’s agents handle the rest,” the release says, and nothing goes live without the marketer’s approval. The company measures campaigns by comparing customers who received them with similar customers who didn’t, and it reports incremental revenue instead of opens and clicks.
A platform’s optimization score grades agreement with the platform
Reddit’s own figures show why a client should read these scores with care. Advertisers with an optimization score of 80% or higher saw a 19.6% lower blended cost per acquisition (CPA) than advertisers with lower scores, based on Reddit internal data from July to September 2026. A 5-point increase in the score “was associated with” a 4.4% lower blended CPA. Advertisers using budget optimization for traffic saw 10% lower cost per click in an internal study from late 2025. Reddit labels the results “not typical” and doesn’t describe its method. So the comparison can’t separate the score’s effect from the kind of advertiser who chases it, who may run bigger budgets or cleaner tracking.
The deeper limit is what the score measures. An optimization score rates how closely a campaign follows the platform’s recommendations, and the platform’s cost metrics count whatever conversion the advertiser told it to count. A lead form filled by someone who never answers the sales call lowers CPA just as well as a form filled by a buyer. That matters most where Reddit’s budget tool is still in beta, on Sales and Lead generation, because those are the objectives where a cheaper conversion and a better customer can split apart.
The conversion a client defines becomes the campaign strategy
Salesforce’s wording puts the weight in the right place. A path that adapts to “a custom conversion metric you define” will only be as good as the metric someone writes. When the team picks email clicks, the agent learns to earn clicks. When the team picks a downstream event, the agent has to learn something closer to revenue.
JustAI’s customer examples show the difference a business-stage goal makes, though they’re vendor-reported results. At Better Mortgage, the share of pre-approved shoppers who went on to start a full loan application rose from 9.25% to 12.08% after JustAI rebuilt two email journeys and tested them against the originals. At Acorns, the company says its agents made more than 1,000 decisions across 65 million messages while steering toward upgrades and retention. Both goals sit close to revenue, and that choice is what makes the results worth reading.
Puglisi’s funnel post explains why the choice belongs to a person. It argues that last-click attribution no longer captures how AI-shaped buyers move, and that “when models are trained without supervision, they learn efficiency faster than ethics.” A goal-driven agent is efficient by design, and it will pursue the definition it receives with more patience than any human campaign manager. The judgment about what counts as a good customer can’t be delegated to the same system that is paid on hitting the number.
How Puglisi would set up a goal-driven campaign agent for a client
The setup starts with a one-page goal statement written before the agent is switched on. It names the conversion in the client’s own terms, such as a sales-accepted lead, a started application or a paid upgrade, and it names the system of record where that event is counted. It also lists what the agent may not trade away to hit the number: a margin floor on discounts, excluded audiences, frequency limits and any product claims legal has not cleared. Most platforms already offer guardrail fields, so the work is deciding what goes in them.
Puglisi’s Checkpoint-Based Governance (CBG) supplies the sign-off. A named person on the client side holds the checkpoint on that goal statement, with authority to accept, modify or reject it, and the decision is recorded with the date. The same person reviews it again when results drift from the client’s own numbers. His distinction between Responsible AI and AI Governance marks the line. On their own, the QA models JustAI pairs with its agents are Responsible AI, a machine checking a machine with no human review, and that’s useful for catching broken links or off-brand copy at scale. Deciding what the agent should chase in the first place is AI Governance, and it needs a human name on it.
Two measures tell a client whether the goal is working. The first is the gap between the platform’s reported cost per conversion and the client’s cost per qualified customer from its own CRM, tracked monthly for each agent-run campaign. A widening gap means the agent is finding conversions the business doesn’t value. The second is the share of agent-sourced conversions that meet the written definition, compared with the share from campaigns the team built by hand before the switch. Where a platform offers it, the client should also ask for a comparison against similar customers who didn’t receive the campaign, the method JustAI describes, so the report shows the lift the campaign caused.
What to watch as campaign agents take over the build
Goal-driven agents move the marketer’s control upstream, to the definition of success, and most client teams have never written that definition down with any precision. The platforms now reward whoever does.
The open problem is visibility into the trade-offs. Salesforce’s agent decides which campaign wins each customer and suppresses the rest, and Reddit’s budget tool moves money between ad groups. Neither announcement says how a client can see what the agent gave up to reach its goal.
Watch whether Reddit publishes the method behind its optimization score, and whether Salesforce exposes a log of suppressed sends and the reasons behind them that a client can audit. Watch, too, whether Reddit’s lead generation and sales budget tools leave beta with any link to downstream lead quality. Until those arrive, the goal statement a client signs is the clearest instruction the agent will ever get, and it deserves more review than any headline the agent writes.

Questions readers ask
What is a goal-driven campaign agent?
A goal-driven campaign agent is marketing software that takes an outcome the marketer sets and then chooses audiences, content, channels and timing to reach it. Salesforce’s Campaign Agent, generally available as of October 2026, and JustAI’s platform, launched October 19, both work this way, with marketer approval of content and guardrails before launch.
What did Reddit announce for advertisers on October 20, 2026?
Reddit added a campaign planner that projects reach, impressions and costs, a campaign optimization score from 0 to 100% with recommendations, and campaign budget optimization that shifts spend toward the best-performing ad groups. Budget optimization is in beta for the Sales, Lead generation and App promotion objectives, and the performance figures come from Reddit’s internal data.
Does a higher Reddit optimization score mean better results?
Reddit reports that advertisers scoring 80% or higher saw 19.6% lower blended CPA, and it labels those results not typical. The comparison is correlational and the method isn’t published. The score also rates agreement with Reddit’s recommendations, so a client should judge results on its own qualified conversions as recorded in its CRM.
What should a marketing team define before turning on a campaign agent?
The team should write a goal statement naming the conversion in business terms, such as a sales-accepted lead or a paid upgrade, and the system of record that counts it. The statement should list limits the agent may not trade away, such as margin floors, excluded audiences, frequency caps and uncleared claims, and carry a named approver.
How does Checkpoint-Based Governance apply to marketing agents?
Checkpoint-Based Governance, Basil C. Puglisi’s framework, places a named person at defined points in the work with authority to accept, modify or reject what happens next, and records that decision. For a campaign agent, the main checkpoint is the goal statement, reviewed again whenever platform results and the client’s own numbers drift apart.
