When setting up a nursery for your baby you’re going to find that you need to wrestle several trains of thought. Depending on the intricacies of the space you live in, you may find yourself flip flopping between your current options. Let’s take a look at the elements of your baby’s nursery that will be the most critical.

How to Prepare a Nursery for a Newborn Baby’s Arrival

If you have options in which room to use remember these considerations:

  • Is the room warm or traditionally cooler? You’ll definitely want to go with the warmer option since newborns have a difficult time regulating their temperatures. Also, they are terrible at keeping blankets on them. If at all possible, pick the room with the warmer environment.
  • Is the room too close to family rooms or high-traffic areas? You may want to go with the less travel option you have since some babies sleep lightly. If you have younger children, obviously the room next to the playroom where shrieking occurs regularly is also not the best idea.
  • Is it too far away from your room? Will wondering if the baby monitor is working or if it will wake you up is a huge source of anxiety for Mom or Dad, pick the room closest to you even if you have to add additional heating options, or temporarily move the family playroom until baby is a few months old and sleeps a little deeper or for longer periods.

Once you have selected the ideal location, you’ll need to do the basics as far as preparing the room to be turned into a nursery. Following this basic list of to-do’s might help.

  1. Clear out all existing furniture. How to Prepare a Nursery for a Newborn Baby's Arrival
  2. Clean out closets.
  3. Clear hallways of any hazardous furniture or debis while you’ll be coming in and out so often.
  4. Choose your nursery theme.
  5. Draw up a layout for the furniture or decorations you plan to include. Go over them with all involved, move items around, move them again and settle on a final draft.

Get to Work!

Once you have completed all the tasks of preparation, you’ll want to get in there, get your hands dirty and get that room ready for your precious cargo.

Prepare the walls for painting by sanding, priming and painting the walls the color you think fits best with your theme. Paint your base colors on and if you plan to have any custom artwork added to your nursery walls, have this done once your own paint dries. Once this is complete, it’s time to think about the floors.

Will you have carpet to make for light footsteps all those times you peek in on your new baby? Do you have hardwoods and prefer rugs? Head to the shopping venue of your choice and grab up wall-to-wall rugs, big area rugs and all the runners that you need. Place them appropriately considering where your furniture will be.

Start moving in that furniture. Put your crib, changing table and any other nursery furniture together and get it set up according to your draft. Do you like it? Does it feel right to you? Does it have the warmth and all the love in it you want? No? Change it. You’re not locked into any deals here. Creating nursery is one of the most fun things you can do by yourself or with your whole family. Plop down your baby monitor when you’re done and you’ll have a room prepared for your precious bundle once they decide to make their appearance!
