As adults, we may admit that we’ve fantasized about how perfect our babies will be. Oh! I just know she’s going to be gorgeous with a lovely shock of hair and perfect pink skin all over! Or Ahhh, Yes, I know my lad will be very handsome and regal just out of the womb! But then her contractions start and you head to the hospital and hours later, the doctor hands you an alien that appears to have sprung forth from your loins.

5 Weird Characteristics of Newborn Babies

Well, if you didn’t get that perfect newborn baby that it shows on those parenting magazines (often those newborns are months old!) don’t be too disappointed. Almost all of the weird quirks babies can be born with will fade before they reach their first birthday.

Baby Cone Head

This is caused by the basic biology of a baby’s head spending hours in the birth canal, but let’s face it, baby cone head looks kind of crazy. Fortunately for the baby and any lurking photographers, the cone head only last a few days up to a week before it slides right back down into the perfectly shaped baby head you enjoyed in your previous perfect baby dreams.

Baby Has More Back Hair Than Grandpa

The hair that forms on your baby while in utero is known as lanugo. Lanugo is the very first hair your body ever makes. Experts believe that this fine hair’s purpose is to regulate the baby’s body temperature while in the womb. Don’t worry overmuch about this body hair. It will keep your baby warm in the few weeks it takes before it falls off.

Soft Spot Fear

Most parents are a little terrified of the soft spot, another strange characteristic baby’s have. While we know it’s there to allow your baby’s brain to continue to grow, it is still a source of anxiety for man. If you look closely, you can probably even mark your baby’s pulse in it. (Egads that’s kind of creepy!) The good news is that the soft spot can take a little handling. Don’t worry if you brushed a bit too hard over it or accidentally push it when shampooing baby’s head.

Baby Lizardian

Does your baby look like a snake that hasn’t yet shed its skin? Covered in scaly dry skin? Well, you would be too if you had been sitting in water for nine months and then was kicked out into the dry air. While it’s best just to wait, you can always scrub lightly over it during bath times and perhaps apply a little fragrance-free lotion from time-to-time to hurry it along if you like, but it will disappear on its own within the first month after birth.

Baby Smoosh Face

Don’t be alarmed if your baby comes out with a face that looks like they’ve been featured in a few MMA matches from the womb. Their eyes may be a little swollen and full of goop and they may spend the first few hours mean mugging the new sunlight their eyes are adjusting to.

Babies are just as diverse in character and features as the rest of us grown folks. If your baby doesn’t much resemble you or your partner as you had hoped, don’t judge too quickly here, as your baby grows into adulthood, I assure you, you’ll see a little bit of you in there somewhere.
