Family Arts and Crafts Homemade Supplies Ideas

For a great brush up on family arts and crafts activities, let’s look over the general requirements and some simple solutions.

Home-Made Crafts Supplies

Here are a few supplies you’ll find your family needs for arts and crafts fun and how you can make them yourself at home.

Make-Your-Own Playdough

To make your own colored play dough follow these simple instructions.

Colored Playdough

Materials

  • 1 cup water
    1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    1/2 cup salt
    1 tablespoon cream of tartar
    Food coloring
    Saucepan
    1 cup flour

Directions

Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
Remove from heat and add flour. Stir, then knead until smooth.
The cream of tartar makes this dough last six months or longer, so if you don’t have it on hand, you won’t be able to store it for very long. Grab some tartar and it will last up to six months.
Store this dough in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer bag.

Homemade Stickers

Materials

  • White paper
    Ruler
    Pencil
    1/2 teaspoon of sugar
    Markers or crayons
    Package of unflavored gelatin
    Small paintbrush
    Water

Directions

You can turn anything into a sticker using this easy recipe. Use the ruler and pencil to divide the paper into same-sized areas that will become the actual stickers. Color designs or pictures onto each square. Mix the adhesive* as outlined below, and brush it onto the back side of the paper. The page will curl up, but when it is completely dry, it can be pressed flat with a heavy phone book. Cut into individual stickers and lick to apply.

*Adhesive: Sprinkle 1 packet of unflavored gelatin into a small bowl with 1 tablespoon of cold water. Let soften for 5 minutes. Add 3 tablespoons of boiling water and stir until dissolved. Add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar.
Homemade Silly Putty

Materials

  • 2 parts white glue
    1 part liquid starch
    Small mixing bowl
    Airtight container

Directions

Combine glue and starch in a bowl and mix well.
Let dry until the putty is workable.
You may have to add a bit more glue or starch. (This may not work well on a humid day.)
Experiment!
Store in an airtight container.
