Camping can take some serious effort, especially if you have children in your camping party. However, once your family learns how to manage camping efficiently, the payoff is priceless. Not only will everyone benefit from the break from all things electronic, but a camping excursion will offer nearly unlimited ways to experience new things, especially of course, the great outdoors.
Fun Camping Activities for Kids and Families
Camping is a great time to learn new things as well as take advantage of the time you now have to experience some old things that may have been tossed to the side in favor of cell phones and video games.
- Board Games – While you may not want to drag the game with the most pieces on earth with you camping, there are plenty of great options you can bring that have limited pieces. There’s also a great board game created just for camping that will pit the parents against the children when it comes to identifying elements of nature they now find themselves immersed in.
- Take a Hike – The length may depend on the ages of children in your group, or the ability of the adults to carry them in a handy babywearing backpack, but one thing is sure about hiking with your family. You’ll learn things together, be close and it will certainly wear off some excess energy anyone of any age has bottled up.
- Nature Games – It isn’t too hard to implement old traveling games into your nature experience. Begin a game of alphabet where everyone must find an item for the letter they are given, or I Spy, where the rules are entirely open! It’s really up to you and your family as to the specific creative games you may enjoy out in nature. This is also a great way to build memories that your children will soon pass on to their own.
- Bring Music to Nature – If you find yourself trapped in a house with many noisy musical aficionados during the week, have them bring their instruments to your next camping trip. Not only can music soothe the savage beast, but not having a cacophony of random instruments bouncing off the thin walls of your home may actually make it easier to pay attention to your budding young musicians.
- Learn to Build a Campfire – Whether you bring a lighter or a flint and tinder teaching your young children the methods in which you can start a fire, and manage one, is excellent knowledge you should impart on them the first chance you get. Don’t forget to teach fire safety, as well as the safest method for putting it out before you leave the campground.
There are many other great ways to enjoy nature with your children. Just don’t forget to bring the smores ingredients and sports balls of any sorts can always have great use made of them when children can’t get their hands on a mobile phone!
