30 Fun and Educational Family Activities for Summer

  1. Build a treehouse.
  2. Visit a local farmer’s market.
  3. Stage your own scavenger hunt.

  7. Write and illustrate your own family’s summer memories book and have it published into a hardcover book.
  8. Donating time cleaning up the trash in local parks.
  9. Have a backyard campfire or head to a local camping park for the real thing.
  10. Plan a town or city wide waterballoon fight. Share on your city’s local facebook pages and using the right hashtags on Twitter.
  11. Go for a hike with the whole family. Everyone should collect their favorite natural items they can find in the area and make a collage all together.
  12. Make library trips a regular weekly occurrence and everyone has to participate. Moms and Dads can read some children’s books and the children can read appropriate adult books. Have a family book club.
  13. Plant a garden of fruits and veggies. If you’re limited in space, plant a few herbs and spices.
  14. Have an outdoor painting party using canvases. Or plan a huge sidewalk chalk art exhibit in your town.
  15. Turn the backyard into a carnival. Set up a face painting area and games like ring toss.
  16. Visit a new museum.
  17. Learn about stargazing and identify as many constellations as possible. Check local websites or newspapers to see if there are any local astronomy groups for kids.
  18. If you have a lake nearby, go hunting for small fossils.
  19. Break out your baseball gloves or your flags for football and start an impromptu neighborhood game.
  20. Visit your local water or amusement park.
  21. Visit an aquarium or zoo to learn about all types of wildlife.
  22. Set up a bike or carwash to earn money for a favorite local charity.
  23. Assemble a real family cookbook and have it printed for every member of the family.
  24. Take a free kid’s workshop at stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot or Pottery Barn.
  25. Let kids paint each other with washable tempera paint, then wash it off in the sprinklers.
  26. Visit a local cave.
  27. Enter everyone in a water lesson. Younger kids may need to learn to swim, juveniles could improve their already basic skills. Adults can learn more advanced techniques in a swimming pool, a lake or the ocean.
  28. Pick a nearby town to visit for the day.
  29. Have a firefly catching contest. But let them go at the end of the night.
  30. Create your family’s own personal smoothie recipe.
