When a Pregnant Woman Should Rush to the Doctor

August 5, 2015 by Joy Lynskey Leave a Comment

Many pregnant women will spend their entire term wondering if they should run to the doctor or nearby ER. It’s entirely understandable to be completely terrified of some signs and symptoms you may display. But let’s take a few moments to go over some of those symptoms that do merit a visit to the ER or your physician and hopefully we can alleviate some anxiety. However, you should always consult your own medical professionals when it comes to signs you feel may be dangerous. You know your body and should always feel free to act accordingly when you feel uncomfortable and in need of medical care or expertise.

When a Pregnant Woman Should Rush to the Doctor

Here are a few symptoms you could experience during your pregnancy that should definitely send you for a quick consult with the nearest medical professionals.

A Headache You Can’t Get Rid Of

If you have a headache that you can’t get rid of with a couple tylenol and plenty of water, (Drink at least 2 glasses) it could be preeclampsia. Call your doctors office and let them know your symptoms, they will get you in quickly for the required test.

Baby Stops Moving

While all babies are different and you may have one that moves less or more than is average, you still know your body and your baby best. If activity seems way below normal, grab yourself some ice cold water and drink a couple glasses. Hopefully that cold stomach will wake up the baby and you’ll feel a lot better and a world less anxious. However, if it doesn’t seem to work, head on into your doctors office.

Unexpected Facial Swelling

If you wake up with a noticeably more swollen face than you went to bed with, this could be a sign of pregnancy-induced hypertension. Contact your medical professionals. Swollen hands and feet are more common symptoms and shouldn’t require medical attention unless they too become extremely swollen in a short period of time.

Severe Vomiting

While some vomiting is to be expected in the first three trimesters, serious vomiting that occurs after that time should always be monitored by your physician. Severe vomiting within the first three months should only require a doctors visit if you have gone a full day without being able to eat.

Extreme Itching

This doesn’t mean the normal itching associated with a growing belly and stretch marks, but a more extreme itching for which scratching seems to offer little to no relief. It may come with a rash. Take a couple of benedryl and if you receive no relief, head to your closest medical professional. It could be a condition known as cholestasis and your doctor will want to keep a close eye on it.

While these are just a few of the symptoms that should drive you to the nearest doctor, there are certainly plenty more. The best move always is to listen to your body, listen to your physician and don’t stop to take a shower when any of those worrying symptoms present themselves, just go.
