5 Important Things You Learn as a Mom-to-Be

There’s thousands of lessons you’ll eventually learn as a Mom but there’s also a few key lessons to be learned from a pregnancy as well.

5 Important Things You Learn as a Mom-to-Be

You won’t have to wait until your baby arrives to learn a few key lessons in life. Here are five of those lessons.

The Sacrifices May Start Immediately

Not every pregnancy is happy feelings and joyful moments. For some Mom’s and Dad’s to be, it can be a struggle. Everything from severe morning sickness to various very serious physical ailments can make a pregnancy a not-so-fun roller coaster ride. Gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and other pregnancy related health issues can be quite stressful and scary for both parents. Cut down on stresses relating to health issues by never being afraid to call your doctor or nurse about anything that worries you. When it comes to the life of your baby and yours, no question is too insignificant.

Relationships Can Weaken Or Grow Stronger

5 Important Things You Learn as a Mom-to-Be

You may have heard horror stories about this couple or that who couldn’t manage the stress of even a healthy pregnancy, much less a difficult one, and split up, even if just temporarily. However, just as with many other realms of relationships, a pregnancy can actually help the relationship grow stronger. When Mom’s and Dad’s to be are fully involved with celebrating the milestones of pregnancy, they can become a stronger unit working as one. You can help to keep your relationship strong by being fully involved regardless of which role you have in the pregnancy. Mom’s keep Dad’s involved by discussing the baby’s activities, measurements, weight and other information gained from doctor visits. Dad’s stay involved by going to those doctor visits and asking questions of medical professionals while you have the chance.

You Have to Put Your Trust in Your Doctor

Most women are nervous about the delivery process. Even if it’s not their first birth they may have questions and concerns that they should always voice to their doctor. It is critical to share during this time, especially when you’re having feelings, emotionally or physically that might seem ‘silly’ to you. Your doctor is a trained medical professional and those things that may sound strange to your ears, are very likely very familiar to theirs. It is very common for pregnant women to have very unusual feelings or cravings. Pica is the act of craving a non-food item. While Pica isn’t limited to pregnant women, it is common for pregnant women to experience it. While the cause for non-food cravings in pregnancy isn’t known for certain, the American Dietetic Association says there may be an association with iron deficiency. Others have speculated that pica cravings are the body’s attempt to make up for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Again, you have to put total trust in your doctor. A minute ago (if you weren’t aware of Pica) saying “Well, Doctor, I feel like I want to eat dirt”, might have sounded crazy to your ears, but it wouldn’t have to your medical professional’s ears, who will now in turn likely have you tested for vitamin and mineral deficiencies and perhaps adding a supplement to your current regimen.

You Can’t Do it All

There’s no way to sugar coat this one. Some women do experience a rush of energy, a huge desire to plan and nest and an overwhelming urge to organize every single thing everywhere. However, at some point, you’re going to have to realize that you can’t possibly do it all. You can’t possibly keep going and going like the Energizer Bunny because certainly you’ll wind down sometime? Right? Yes. That’s correct. Try to make sure the closer you get 5 Important Things You Learn as a Mom-to-Be1to delivery, the more energy you conserve. I’m not saying that you should stop indulging in any physical activities your doctor approved and you enjoy. I am saying that an exhausted mother may not be able to expect the smoother delivery that a well-rested and naturally energized (and excited) Mom may achieve.

Meeting Someone You’ve Never Met

Not everyone has the same reaction to meeting their baby for the first time. It’s important to remember there’s no written script, you shouldn’t find yourself forced to coo and gurgle over your newborn/s the second you meet him or her, or him and her! Some new Mom’s and Dad’s may find themselves glancing at their new baby through tears of overwhelming joy and excitement. Others may find themselves more quiet, observant and just as overwhelmed, with fear. Both reactions are entirely normal. It can be immensely exciting and intensely scary to suddenly meet that person whose existence you’ll be responsible for for 18 years. *For life, who are we kidding* It doesn’t get more intimidating than that.
