Whether you’re a 2nd time Mom or Dad or a new Grandmother or Father, it can be incredibly easy to forget about all the travails of newborn-hood, once you’ve lived through those toddler hugs and smiles. So, once another baby wiggles their way into your life again, you may be surprised at how utterly surprising it is that you could have forgotten about these elements of the day in the life of a newborn baby.
Poop! Poop Everywhere!
I don’t need to know a lot about physics to know that it seems almost magical the amount of times a newborn can poop. We won’t even discuss the quantity or the blowouts. It’s no minor miracle if you can get through a day without being pooped on. No surprise either that newborn babies can fill a diaper without even a by-your-leave or slight flicker of the eye.
And who can get through a diaper change without using 3 diapers? You have the one you remove, the one that gets peed on while you’re changing the first one, and then the one that finally makes it to the baby’s behind, right before being pooped in while you’re still latching it on.
It’s All About that Busy, ‘Bout that Busy, ‘Bout that Busy, No Sleep
Where did the last hour go? How is it possible you haven’t even moved from the couch, baby on your lap, on your 12th episode of something Disney? And ohhh, goodness help you if you try to get up and accomplish something with an infant around. Why isn’t this baby taking naps anymore? Just another bout of colic to fray Mom or Pop’s nerves and agitate the baby’s belly for another hour or more. In the day of a life of a newborn baby, it seems like no one gets more than a few minutes to themselves before another round of basic care begins. Even the most organized parents will go through this. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Accomplish one task at a time and move on.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE BABY??
Even the most together parents will suffer through bouts of extreme paranoia when it comes to a newborn baby. They haven’t been around long enough to establish any patterns or personality, nap style or hunger cues. Has the baby slept too long? Long enough? Is that too much food? Not enough?? The great news is that soon enough, everything, even the unpleasant parts, will at least fall into a pattern of predictability that will take away some of the sheer terror of caring for a newborn.
