Navigating the world as a larger-than-usual, morning sickness having, frequent peeing machine is hard enough at times without the need to consider the safety of every single thing that you do, but many pregnant women will be inundated with suggestions on how to stay the safest during this time. Some of those suggestions may be viable and some of them may be pure old wives tale craziness. So we wanted to put together a list of some of the most frequently asked and common questions and answers about safety during pregnancy.

Common Questions and Answers About Safety During Pregnancy

We’ve put together a list of some of the most frequently asked questions by pregnant women and their partners.

What Medications are safe during pregnancy?

While many over-the-counter medications are completely safe for you during pregnancy, there are some that present direct dangers to your fetus. Tylenol is safe for general aches and pains. For allergy issues, benadryl and claritin have proven safe during pregnancy. For cold and cough, two of the most common ingredients, dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant) and guaifenesin (an expectorant) have both proved safe for pregnant women. For heartburn, antacids such as Tums and Mylanta appear to be safe in pregnancy. For any other medications and before taking any over-the-counter remedies, always ask your medical professional first.

Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Although there is no concrete, peer-reviewed, science supported research that proves caffeine is detrimental to your developing fetus, most medical professionals will definitely suggest that you limit your intake. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it pulls fluids and calcium from both you and baby and will keep you running to the bathroom. (As if you aren’t peeing enough already.) Also, caffeine has no nutritional value and can affect your mood, sleep schedule and iron absorption.

Is hair coloring okay while pregnant?

Like caffeine, there’s no available information that proves that the chemicals in hair coloring will harm your fetus. However, there are alternatives you can try if you are worried about this issue. All natural hair coloring like Henna is one of those great, safer-feeling options.

Are loud concerts safe during pregnancy?

Ignore any old wives tales that tell you a loud concert will hurt your baby! It won’t. The louder than usual noise might keep your baby awake, but there is no reason why you can’t attend. Your baby may enjoy the music as much as you do!

Along with the usual questions and answers, there are just some things you should plan to quit when you’re pregnant.

What to Quit When You’re Pregnant

These are really easy. If you are a frequent user of any of the following before your pregnancy, consult a physician for anything you might need to help stop, and then stop.

  • Smoking
  • Drinking
  • Street Drugs

While not as dire, there are also other things you should avoid during your pregnancy.

  • Changing cat litter
  • Unpasteurized foods
  • Cold cuts

Deli meats may contain bacteria called listeria, which can cause an illness that can lead to preterm labor and miscarriage.

There are certainly many hidden dangers within your home that you’ll want to watch out for as well. Take a look at this great post from The Bump on those elements within your home that you may want to remedy before you get pregnant if possible. And as always, if you have any concerns, fears, or questions relating to your pregnancy and any hidden dangers, consult your obstetrician as soon as possible.
